Our Shoebox

November 18, 2010

We decided to pack a shoebox this year for Operation Christmas Child.

We spent the day with some friends who also packed a box, letting the kids prepare Christmas greetings to send along with their gift. They had a lot of fun and especially enjoyed getting to show their friends what they bought to send in their box.

This is the first time we've ever done this, but I can easily see it becoming a new favorite tradition.

Sometimes I can discourage myself about doing things like this because I start wondering if it's really going to make any difference.  But I was really impacted when I read this, about what a big deal one little box can be.

It's not too late!  There's four more days to drop off a box if you'd like to participate. You can click here to find the nearest drop off location.

Word-Full Wednesday

As you do not know what is the way of the wind,
Or how the bones grow in the womb of her who is with child,
So you do not know the works of God who makes everything.

-Ecclesiastes 11:5

Sabbath

November 15, 2010

Miss E is studying the Old Testament right now for school. Our latest assignment was to have a (simplified) traditional Jewish Sabbath meal.

The girls were really excited about it. It was fun setting the table fancy and feeling like normal dinner was a special occasion.

I made challah using this recipe. Mine turned out lopsided because I braided it wrong, but it was so delicious!

I love learning about the Jewish traditions because a lot of what they do holds so much meaning. It's not just all about ritual.

It was a really sweet time of rest and just focusing on Jesus, even if we didn't actually do it on the traditional day of the Sabbath.
