Confession Time

May 14, 2010

Okay here we go.

Are you ready to know my secret????

Promise you won't stop being my friend?

This is my confession…

about a month ago, I quit washing my hair.

Are you shocked? Don't be shocked.  It's not as bad as it sounds.

I still wash my hair, just not in the traditional sense.

Inspired by this post and others like it, I couldn't resist giving it a try.

And of course I had to drag my girls along for the ride.  (Hombre kindly but firmly refused to be part of our experiment)

My expectation was that we would try it, our hair would be gross, we'd give it up. The end.

Only that wasn't how it worked.

Our hair wasn't gross. Our hair felt totally clean.  And smelled totally clean.  And was really soft.

And now these are my new favorite things:

Reasons I'm in love with this new hair care plan:

For my girls :

  • prior to this my eight year old was developing a dandruff problem.  Since we've been doing this that has pretty much disappeared.
  • We have eliminated the need for tangle spray, which was an absolute necessity before.
  • this is cheaper than the dye & perfume free shampoo and conditioner I was buying before.

For myself:

  • It's great for curly hair.  I just comb it in the shower before rinsing the vinegar and my hair is done.
  • It's made my extremely dry hair feel less like straw and more like hair.
  • Biggest reason: I'm in love with the simplicity.  I have gone from needing dandruff shampoo + regular shampoo + high dollar conditioner + hair gel and/or frizz cream + hairspray, TO baking soda + apple cider vinegar + water.  So much simpler. And cheaper too!

I can't say if it would work for everyone.  I'm sure it's greatly affected by your hair type.  Maybe it won't work forever for me.  But for now I love it.

Don't think I'm crazy.

I promise I'm not a dirty hippy. ;)

Word-Full Wednesday

Sweet Offerings

May 11, 2010

A few days ago Miss E came to me with a handful of tiny little orange flowers, gathered from the various weeds in our yard no doubt.

"Mommy, I picked these just for you."

I smiled and thanked her as she placed them in my hand.

"You better put them somewhere because they will just die," she told me in her matter of fact way.  "But I really wanted to give them to you.

I don't know why, but all of the sudden those little flowers became so much more precious.  She knew they were not much, but in her little five year old world, they were all she had to offer.  And she wanted to give her mommy a gift.

And I loved her so much for it.

I found myself wondering if this is how Jesus feels towards us.

I am often discouraged by what little I am able to offer to our Savior.  It seems so worthless to bring anything I can give to the King of kings.

But my heart was filled with hope as I pictured Him, receiving my pitiful offering, the best I can find to bring Him in my broken little world.  Him knowing that I know my gift is really quite worthless. But also knowing that I love Him so much, I just desperately want to give Him something.

Do I make His heart swell with joy the way mine did over the humble offering of my girl?

I hope so.

I cannot do much.  My amen is only a weak one.
Yet as the widow put in her two mites which was all she had to live on,
so Lord I put my time and eternity into Your treasury.
It is all Yours.
~Charles Spurgeon

This & That

May 10, 2010

I'm feeling like quite the slacker with my lack of consistency in posting lately.  Sorry :(

The truth is I've just been busy.  A good kind of busy, doing things we enjoy, but non-stop busy!

When we're not out somewhere being busy, things have been busy at home too, mostly with outside work.

My goals for now are

  • getting my garden planted
  • clearing all the weeds out of the yard (it's snake season {shudder}…must keep the ground clear so they're easy to spot!)
  • pushing through these last three weeks of schoolwork with the girls
  • making time for the girls to catch up on some neglected sleep :)
  • enjoying all the stuff that comes up in the meantime.

Tonight is Hombre's first softball game of the season.  Looking forward to that…praying no one creams my favorite pitcher with a ball in the face!

What's going on in your life today?

(P.S.  I'll try to be more on top of posting this week.  Whatever you do, make sure you come back on Friday for my big confession!)
