Sweethearts

February 16, 2010

I used to have one driving obsession when it came to my girls.

Get the perfect picture.

PERFECT.

Glamorous pose, princess smiles, everyone looking right at the lens, sitting up nice and tall, no wrinkled noses, and no scrunchy eyes.

Obviously my expectations of small children were beyond delusional.

Over the last couple of years though, my desires have shifted. For the better.  For the sanity of my entire family, I have let go of those crazy ideas, and accepted, even embraced the truth.

The best picture is one that captures them right now.  As they are, at this moment in their lives.  That is what I really want to hold onto.  In twenty years if all I have is photo after photo of pasted on fake smiles and statue children, they might be pretty, but they will not hold any real memories.

For me, part of embracing right now and enjoying it to the fullest has become documenting the lives of my children.  The real them.  This focus is helping me enjoy today a lot more (as opposed to having a nervous breakdown every time someone refuses to look at the camera).  And I think in a few years when they’re old enough that all they want is picture perfect snapshots of themselves, I’ll be so thrilled to have all of these little reminders of the carefree and unaware little girls they once were.

For Today… February 15, 2010

Outside my window… it was a bright, sunshiny day.  My favorite kind. :)

I am thinking… about de-cluttering.  I think it might be becoming a bit of an obsession.

From the learning rooms… we decided to be like all the school kids and have a holiday today!

I’m thankful for… friends.  All different kinds.

From the kitchen… my friend posted a recipe on Facebook yesterday for homemade cereal.  I’m trying to decide if it’s worth the time/effort.  What do you think.

I am wearing…

I am reading… lots of blog reading lately.

I am creating… time in my days and weeks to slow down.

I am hearing… the faithful hum of the Xbox.  Other than that, quiet.  Which is a delightful alternative to crying children. :)

Around the house… how do you do it all, and keep up without becoming obsessed with doing it all?  Or how do you relax about stuff without it getting completely out of control?  I’m in this permanent state of perplexity.  Help!

A few plans for the rest of the week… the big Angelina party is Saturday.  Looking forward to that!

Or leave me a note in the comments… I’d love to hear about your day :)

I saw this idea online somewhere a few months ago, but I can’t find it now.  So if you’re reading this and it was your idea, speak up!  I’m really not trying to steal it! :)

Anyway, this is the new system we’ve been trying out for “morning responsibilities”.  Each girl has a cup full of super-size popsicle sticks with a chore written on one end and a big star on the other.

Every morning I make sure the sticks are chore side up.  After breakfast as they take care of each of their jobs they flip the stick and “get” a star.

The novelty of it is making our mornings a lot smoother. I hope they don’t get bored with it too soon.
