Best Friends

June 26th, 2009 by Ashley

I knew when we set off for a week in the land of cows that there would be many things I’d be sad to leave.

I knew I would miss being able to hang out with my sister every day.

Being able to hold my sweet little niece.

I knew I’d miss the quiet and relaxed feeling of life out in the middle of nowhere.

The unending supply of delicious beef. ;)

I was prepared for the gloom of leaving all this and more.

What I wasn’t prepared for was how I would feel about leaving Lucy.

Lucy is my sister’s dog.  Amazing dog, by the way.  As far as dogs go, she’s definitely one of the most pleasant I’ve ever known.

But I’m not really one of those people that attaches to animals.  I can take them or leave them, don’t want to see them sad, but don’t really want to touch them… you get what I’m saying.

So I had zero plans to miss the dog.

Then Miss A stepped in.

It was love at first sight.

Once Lucy walked in, nothing else really mattered.

Every moment was about Lucy.

As soon as she woke in the morning Miss A was on a frantic quest to find Lucy.  The first morning we found her outside in pajamas and boots calling for her beloved new friend.

All the girls really did love Lucy, but there was a connection Miss A seemed to have with her that was different.  She never tired of her, and all she really wanted was to just be with her.

I’ve never connected to an animal in this way, but I didn’t have to watch long to know this was something very big.  And before the week was even half over I was dreading the day that I would have to take my girl away from her treasured friend.

We talked about how we would come visit Lucy again.  And though I was fighting a ridiculous surge of emotions over the whole thing, Miss A just smiled broadly and said “I know. And Lucy loves me!”

Love is definitely the perfect word to describe it.

I think dogs are the most amazing creatures; they give unconditional love.
For me they are the role model for being alive.
